Revolutionizing Tomato Cultivation: Experiments with Abimax Hydromagnetic Water in Gigantic Greenhouses!

Revolutionizing Tomato Cultivation: Experiments with Abimax Hydromagnetic Water in Gigantic Greenhouses!

Large Scale Tomato Cultivation – Using Technology & Nature in harmony

The year started with a phone call from our Nordic supplier Spring Sweden who announced she was approached by Sweden’s biggest tomato grower to run trials using Abimax magnetic water treatment. No problems I thought until I discovered that they use six acres of greenhouses growing tomatoes on a vast scale. Every January, around 200,000 seedlings are planted. From March through November, the harvest is in full swing - producing roughly 2,700 tonnes of tomatoes annually, with 200,000–300,000 tomatoes picked every single day during peak season.

Based in southern Sweden, Elleholms Tomatodling AB is a remarkable story of scale, sustainability, and innovation, this family-owned greenhouse operation has become one of Sweden’s leading tomato producers, delivering millions of locally grown tomatoes every season. Their mission is simple but powerful:

Give great taste * produce crops sustainably * and supply locally using the minimal of transport from farm to table. And they’re doing it on an impressive scale.

Check out the infrastructure and production figures - the greenhouses span 60,000 m² (6 hectares). Every January, around 200,000 seedlings are planted. From March through November, the harvest is in full swing - producing roughly 2,700 tonnes of tomatoes annually, with 200,000–300,000 tomatoes picked every single day during peak season.

That’s natural tomato growing, at industrial scale, but with a sustainable mindset.

A Modern Greenhouse Ecosystem

At Elleholm, technology and nature work side by side. Their production system combines several advanced and environmentally responsible techniques:

· Bumblebees for natural pollination
· Magnetic Water recycling systems for irrigation and nutrients
· LED grow lights to extend the growing season

· Heating using industrial surplus energy from nearby facilities
All of this helps reduce environmental impact while maintaining high quality and flavour- something Swedish consumers increasingly demand.

A New Step Forward: Magnetic Water Treatment

The Lilja Family- Owners since 2007

Abimax Magnostream Pro

In October 2025, Thomas Lilja, the owner of Elleholm Tomatoes, held a meeting with Abimax Nordic partner Spring Sweden to support his company in conducting magnetic water trials. They decided to use seven Magnastream Pro devices placed along a 65-meter long section of the greenhouse to magnetize the water for 40 rows of plants. The opposite side of the greenhouse will serve as an untreated control. Since the greenhouse operates a closed-loop recycling system, the two sides remain completely separate, which allows for clear comparisons between the treated and untreated areas.

The goal of this project is to magnetically treat the irrigation water for an entire growing season. The treated water will flow through one side of the greenhouse, while the other side will receive untreated water. We will closely monitor the growth of the tomatoes on a weekly basis, comparing the harvesting data and the weight of the fruit from both sides.
According to Noorah Sodring from Spring Sweden, when she asked Thomas about his expectations for the Abimax devices. He replied, "If one branch produces just one more tomato, or if the tomatoes weigh more than the average, that would be a huge win’’. Because Elleholm already operates closed-loop water recycling, enhancing water quality can have a meaningful impact across the entire growing cycle.

But in reality, that ambition says everything about the mindset at Elleholm. Even as a large, established grower, they remain curious, experimental, and open to new technologies that could improve both sustainability and productivity.

The Bigger Picture
What’s happening at Elleholm reflects something larger in modern agriculture: The future of food production will come from combining natural processes with smart technology.
Abimax Magnostream Pro

Family farming values operating at industrial scale. It’s a powerful reminder that innovation in agriculture doesn’t always mean replacing nature - sometimes it means supporting it in smarter ways. And if the result is chemical-free, tastier tomatoes with lower environmental impact, that’s a win for everyone.
